Okay so I went into it knowing like absolutely nothing other than how much Tumblr was fucking complaining before it came out. I hadn’t even watched a trailer. I didn’t even fucking know it was The Snow Queen story by Hans Christen Anderson because I’m a fucking ninny okay. Tangled was pretty good, and I really liked Wreck It Ralph so it makes sense this would follow suit.
So anyway this is a really good movie. I’ll be brief but here’s why:
1. First Scandinavian tale by Disney and I always appreciate when they branch out culturally. Plus, the Danes are awesome are you kidding me.
2. Characterization. Disney has a really hard time writing characters I hate. I enjoyed all the characters, even Olaf who I thought from seeing on posters and shit like “oh wonderful there’s a stupid fucking comic relief super random “AWKWARD…” trilobite following the main characters around.” No, Olaf is hilarious, fuck off. Anna and Elsa are great (hi, siblings with opposed personalities always get me going). I liked that they kind of explore mental health and actual anxiety with Elsa, that’s refreshing in a kid’s movie. Also refreshing is the fact that SPOILER this movie really pushes sister/family love and ultimately culminates with the “act of true love” trope being performed not as you are led to expect by Kristoff giving Anna a “kiss of true love” or any of that noise. NO, the act was a self-sacrifice by Anna to save her tormented, vilified sister from death by the sword. Good lord, how cool. Can you imagine some shit like that happening in a Disney movie from the 1940’s? No, you can’t. Women have come a long way from being stupid ragdolls saved by princes. You can start by thanking Mulan.
3. MUSIC I LOVE YOU. I got all pumped up from the Norwegian chants and fiddles in the intro. I fucking single-tear’d through Do You Want To Build a Snowman? I got heart tingles from Let It Go. Really good stuff. I wish there was
more any music to Wreck It Ralph, so this kinda makes up for it.
4. It looks great. The fractals in Elsa’s ice was notably cool. The landscapes and scenery were cool. EVERYTHING’S COOL. GET IT? FUCKING FROZEN? AWESOME. Go see it.
